The Justices' Clerks' Society

“Putting Justice First”

The Justices’ Clerks’ Society was founded in 1839 and incorporated in 1903.  It is a professional body representing Justices’ Clerks and Assistant Justices’ Clerks to Magistrates and to District Judges (Magistrates’ Courts) in England and Wales and is committed to improving the quality of justice in Magistrates’ Courts.  One of the main objects of the Society is to keep under review the operation of the law, especially that administered by Magistrates’ Courts in England and Wales , to point out its defects and to support and promote proposals for improvement.  Through the members of its national Council, assisted by the specialist networks, the Society takes an active part in the development of all aspects of the law relating to Magistrates’ Courts and is able to respond to a wide range of proposals emanating from government departments, agencies and other professional bodies.  Members of the Society also play an active role in numerous bodies ranging from the Criminal Justice Consultative Council to the Judicial Studies Board, in addition to developing their own initiatives and innovations.
